Let’s Talk.. Self Care and Self Love

There is always so much to say when it comes to the aspect of taking care of yourself and self love and with that being said, social media has got us thinking that doing a face mask and lighting a candle is initially self care and a way of loving yourself. Those things are a way to wind down and relax, which I do, do myself but they are not the direct route to taking care and loving yourself. Self care, as the name suggests is all about taking care of the self, of your own body, mind, thoughts and feelings. I wanted to dedicate a blog post on the different ways you could take care of yourself and to feel ready for the year ahead.

Get into a routine: Getting into a routine not only helps with being organised and having a structure to your day, but it also allows you to be busy, so there isn’t that time to overthink things and doubting yourself. You can plan your weekdays and weekends, depending on your work/job/uni and schedule in things to do that will keep you going and busy. Some of these things could be catching up with a friend over coffee, taking a workout/yoga class, going on a run, exploring a news area you live in, anything that will keep you on foot.

Reflect on yourself: Following on from the previous post, being able to fit in a time slot in your routine where you can sit down and reflect on yourself mentally, will enable you to focus on yourself in a healthier way in the long run. You can do this by, journalling, keeping a diary, on the notes app on your phone. It’s important to write down the highs of your life/self and then writing down what you want to change, improve and how, will help drive your focus to your main goal of self and will remind you on why you started in the first place.

Accept yourself as who you are: There are aspects of ourselves that we may not be able to change in terms of our physical self and mental self and that’s where we need to learn to accept ourselves as who we are. Working towards a change and improvement is great and amazing when you see progress and motivation to carry on. However, when you find yourself beating yourself up for not being good enough or reaching that goal quicker, that is probably the time to take a step back and accept yourself as who you are and celebrate the victories you’ve already achieved.

Surround yourself with like-minded people: There’s nothing worse than trying to improve yourself and heal in an environment with people you don’t get along with, don’t bring the best out in you and just are toxic. Spending time and socalising with like-minded people can bring the best of you out, as they will be there to support you and celebrate your success with you. Similarly, distancing yourself with the people who you think aren’t good for you will be hard and difficult at first but you will benefit from it in the long run.

Take some time out for yourself: Last but not least, spending some down time alone, will help you recharge, relax and reflect on yourself. This doesn’t have to be staying at home, but doing things on your own like visiting a gallery, spot of shopping, going on a walk and going to a coffee shop will help you get back on track. Likewise, doing a bit of a pamper session is also a way of spending time by yourself, like taking a bit longer to do your skincare, reading a book, watching a film, doing a face mask, learning a new hobby or a skill are some options too.

Hope you enjoyed reading this blog post and were able to take a few things away.

I loved this post, isolation/lockdown has given me a lot of time to focus on myself and my mental health, and whilst I can’t wait to get out and back to work it’s been an important time for self reflection πŸ™‚
